The key budgetary measures during an Interactive Session with the Press

In the context of the presentation of the National Budget 2020/21 on 4th June 2020, the Ministry of Finance, Economic Planning and Development in collaboration with the Economic Development Board, the Mauritius Broadcasting Corporation and the Mauritius Film Development Corporation organized a special  interactive session with the press on Saturday 6th June 2020 at the Atal Bihari Vajpayee Tower, Ebene.

The interactive question and answer session which was attended by more than 20 members of the press, served as a platform to demystify the budgetary measures for the public.  During the meeting, the Minister of Finance, Economic Planning and Development, Dr. Renganaden Padayachy underlined that this budget, themed “Our new normal: the economy of life”, is focused on solidarity, and creativity.

The session allowed the Honourable Minister to address and explain significant budgetary measures in ensuring the financial and economic stability of the country.  In this context, he underscored the importance of key sectors namely, tourism, manufacturing, and the construction industry.

The Minister also highlighted the importance of agro-industry to ensure food security and self-sufficiency.  He added that the measures for the sector aim at giving a new impetus by attracting the youth and investors to exploit the array of opportunities.

This exercise has also allowed the Finance Minister to elaborate on a series of measures to enable structural reforms such as the old age pension openness of the economy and improving the efficiency of the public sector.  He further elaborated on construction of housing units for the underprivileged, the progressive and equitable tax system, setting up of a data technology park, the importance of the blue economy amongst others.
